Septum Piercing Guide for Ring Styles Gauges Sizes and Jewellery Ideas

Buying jewellery online is a little tricky when you are not about to touch it with your hands. With septum piercing the rings are either too big or small or generally not up to your preference. The fix to online piercing jewellery is simple: pick the gauge first, diameter second, and style last; once those three match, wearing the right septum jewellery is possible.

Septum Gauge and Size Guide

Before looking at designs, know the thickness you are currently wearing. Do not move between gauges just because two rings look similar online.

Most people are comfortable with 16G normal septum gauge. But this doesn’t mean it is a size fit all. An 18 gauge septum piercing gives a noticeably finer look. It works particularly well when you want the jewellery to sit quietly alongside other facial piercings rather than become the main feature.

A 14g septum piercing is thicker and gives even simple rings more presence. If you like heavier-looking jewellery without moving into stretched sizes, this is often a good middle ground.

Diameter Changes the Look More Than People Expect

Diameter is also important because it can make a jewellery look completely different. A smaller diameter stays closer to the nose. A larger diameter drops lower and makes the ring much more visible. This is why a thin septum ring with a large diameter may actually stand out more than a thicker ring that fits tightly underneath the nose.

If you like a close fit, a small horseshoe septum ring is one of the easiest styles to work with. Just avoid choosing such a small diameter that the ends press against the nose.

Choose the Fit Before the Design

A ring that looks snug on one person may hang much lower on another. The placement of the piercing itself also changes how much of the jewellery is visible. If you already own one ring that fits perfectly, measure that ring rather than starting from scratch.

Check:

  • Gauge or bar thickness

  • Inner diameter

  • Ring style

  • Size of decorative ends

  • How far the ring hangs below your nose

Those measurements are far more useful than simply searching for the same-looking septum ring piercing jewellery.

Horseshoe or Clicker

Horseshoes are practical. A simple horseshoe can become something completely different just by swapping balls for spikes. For example, a black spike septum ring gives a darker alternative look without needing an oversized ring.

A more noticeable spiky septum piercing can use longer cone ends or decorative spikes, but check where those points sit when you smile, eat and move your upper lip.

Clickers are better if you want a complete decorative front rather than separate ends. They also tend to give the jewellery a cleaner finished shape.

What’s the Thing with Pretty Septum Rings?

For a pretty septum piercing, one good focal detail usually works better than a ring covered in stones, charms and patterns. If you want a beautiful septum piercing, look at how the ring follows the shape of your nose. A simple decorative clicker that fits properly can look much better than an expensive piece with the wrong diameter. For softer styling, cute septum jewellery can include tiny CZ details, opal-style stones, small hearts, stars or delicate patterned clickers.

When Colour Works Better Than Another Shape

Changing the metal colour can completely change a piercing without changing the jewellery size. A blue septum ring, for example, stands out immediately against otherwise silver or plain jewellery. You can build a full blue septum piercing look by repeating that colour in a nostril stud, helix piece or other ear jewellery rather than wearing several large blue pieces together.

Geometric Septum Rings

Not every septum ring needs to be round. A v shaped septum ring creates a sharper centre point and can make the piercing look more structured. This works especially well if most of your other jewellery is minimal.

A spiral septum ring gives a completely different effect. It has more movement visually and tends to suit people who want their septum jewellery to look less conventional. A swirl septum ring offers a similar decorative feel but can look softer depending on the shape of the design.

If your aim is simply to turn your septum into a cool piercing, experimenting with shape is often more effective than just choosing a bigger ring.

Septum and Nostril Piercings Together

With a nose ring septum piercing combination, avoid using two large hoops sitting almost on top of each other. A smaller nostril hoop with a slightly larger septum ring usually creates better separation.

A nose ring and septum piercing combination also does not have to match perfectly. You can mix a plain nostril ring with a decorative septum clicker or do the reverse.

If you have a double nostril and septum piercing, think of the three pieces as one setup.

For example:

  • Two tiny nostril studs + decorative septum clicker = balanced.

  • Two nostril hoops + large ornate septum ring = much heavier look.

  • Neither is wrong. The question is which piercing you want people to notice first.

Is a Septum a Good Third Piercing?

If you already have two nose piercings, adding a septum as a third piercing can work extremely well because it fills the centre rather than adding another piece to one side.

The important part is spacing.

Three large pieces can look crowded quickly, whereas a mix of small and statement jewellery gives each piercing its own space.

This is also why the term septum earrings can be slightly misleading when shopping. Septum jewellery usually uses ring, clicker, horseshoe, circular barbell or pincher styles rather than traditional earring constructions. Check the actual jewellery measurements rather than relying only on the product name.

Pinchers and Larger Septum Sizes

Pinchers are one of the easiest ways to make a septum look visually heavier.

  • A 14g septum pincher is still close to conventional septum sizing, so it gives you the pincher shape without the dramatic thickness of a heavily stretched piercing.

  • A 3mm septum ring is already much thicker visually. At this point, jewellery begins to look deliberately stretched rather than simply chunky.

  • Moving up again to a 6g septum ring, approximately 4 mm thick, creates a very bold look.

  • A 2 gauge septum, around 6 mm, is a completely different level of stretching and should not be treated as simply another jewellery size.

  • Stretching should happen gradually. Do not jump from a standard septum size to one of these larger gauges just because you like the jewellery.

Quick Style Matcher

A simple ring in the right size can look better than an elaborate piece that hangs too low. And once your basic measurements are right, you can move between horseshoes, clickers, spikes, coloured rings, skulls, pinchers and geometric designs without guessing every time.

The best septum jewellery collection is not the one with the most designs. It is the one where you already know which sizes work for you and can choose the style based purely on what you feel like wearing that day.
