G23 titanium is the commercial designation for Ti-6Al-4V ELI, an implant-grade titanium alloy classified under ASTM F136, the same standard used for surgical implants and orthopaedic hardware. It contains zero nickel, which is the metal responsible for the majority of contact dermatitis reactions in body jewellery wearers. Unlike 316L surgical steel, which contains 10–14% nickel, G23 titanium is inert in tissue contact and is the material recommended by the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) for body jewellery. It is appropriate for sensitive, healing, and long-term piercings.

Threaded jewellery uses a screw mechanism, the decorative top rotates onto a threaded post. Push-fit (threadless) jewellery uses a tension-pin system: the top has a slightly bent pin that inserts into the hollow post and is held by spring tension, with no rotation required. Push-fit is generally easier to insert and remove in hard-to-reach placements like helix and tragus piercings, and carries less risk of cross-threading. Choosing too short risks pressure on the tissue; too long and the back plate lifts away from the skin.

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) finishes, Gold, Rose Gold, and Black, are applied directly to the G23 titanium substrate through a vacuum bonding process. When intact, PVD-coated titanium jewellery is body-safe and does not introduce the allergen concerns associated with plated metals. The titanium base beneath is the same implant-grade material as the plain finish. As PVD coating wears over time, the titanium substrate is exposed, which remains inert. If you have a severe metal sensitivity, plain (uncoated) G23 titanium is the most straightforward option.
